Keeping plaque from building up in and on your teeth is the key to healthy teeth and gums. Plaque can attract bacteria that cause cavities, gum disease and persistent bad breath. Also, remember that your tongue can attract bacteria too! When you eat, fragments of food collect on your tongue. As these fragments decay, bacteria form a white coating on the top of your tongue.

At home, you can practice a four-step routine that will keep plaque and harmful bacteria from building up.

4-Step Teeth Cleaning Routine

To keep your teeth and gums healthy:

  1. Brush your teeth and use an antiseptic mouthwash two times a day (itís best to do so after breakfast and before going to bed)
  2. Floss daily two times a day (after breakfast and before bedtime)
  3. Use a toothbrush or a tongue scraper to clean your tongue regularly
  4. Visit your dentist for dental checkups
